First African American Head Coach to win a Super Bowl


  • Tony Dungy was born October 6, 1955 in Jackson, Michigan
  • Dungy was a great student and standout athlete..
  • Dungy went to the University of Minnesota on a full football scholarship and played as the starting quarter back.
  • After failing to get selected in the 1977 NFL draft, Dungy tried out for the Pittsburg Steelers and made it.
  • From there Dungy was traded to the San Francisco 49ers and then traded again to the New York Giants.


  • He began coaching in 1980 as a n assistant coach at his alma mater and then became the youngest NFL coach with the Steelers.
  • Dungy coached other teams afterwards but got his first head coaching opportunity in 1996 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
  • After being fired from the Bucs, he went to the Indianapolis Colts.
  • This is the team he lead to the Super Bowl ZLI on February 4, 2007 against the Chicago Bears (29-17).
  • Dungy is the 3rd person in NFL history yo win a Super Bowl Title as a player and head Coach.
  • He is also the first African American head coach to win a Super Bowl
