  • Carole Ann-Marie Gist, born May 8, 1969, in Detroit, Michigan.
  • Gist is of African American and Cherokee heritage.
  • Gist won the title of Miss Michigan USA in 1989 and then won the title of Miss America March 2, 1990.


  • She was the first contestant from Michigan to win Miss USA and broke the 5 year streak of winners from Texas.
  • Gist was 5’11” and the tallest Miss America
  • At the time of her crowning she was a junior majoring in marketing and management at Northwood University in Midland.
  • Currently, Gist is married with 2 children.
